Malaysia tightens border control after Thai attacks

Malaysian police have intensified security measures at the Malaysia-Thailand border in response to simultaneous explosions and terrorist attacks that occurred in southern Thailand. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd. Khalid Ismail stated that the increased vigilance is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of Malaysians frequently traveling to the neighboring country.

Mohd. Khalid advised Malaysians to temporarily reduce or postpone their travel to southern Thailand, emphasizing the current tense security situation. "In my opinion, with the current tense security situation, it is better for our people to reduce movement there and try to avoid it at this time," he said. He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution and the continued peace of the border.

The heightened security follows a series of attacks on August 22 in the Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces. These incidents included bombings and attacks on public facilities and premises, with reports indicating 51 incidents, including improvised explosive device (IED) attacks. The impact of the explosions was felt across the border, with residents in Malaysian border areas like Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang reporting strong sounds that caused their homes to shake.

In Sungai Golok, a tense situation led to road blockades after explosions, temporarily stranding at least one Malaysian citizen. Meanwhile, the Southeast Brigade Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain, confirmed that the General Operations Force (PGA) is prepared to deploy additional assets, including armored vehicles, drones, and special teams, to address any potential developments. He assured that the PGA remains vigilant about security in the neighboring country and is ready for any challenges.
