Malaysian actor Wan Raja laments lack of diverse roles

Veteran Malaysian actor Wan Raja, known for his versatile performances, feels his creative potential is stifled by a lack of diverse roles. While he is appreciated by producers for his willingness to accept any character, this has led to a pattern of stereotypical parts, hindering his artistic growth.

"Actors are looking for a living. But I am not a legendary actor who chooses the roles or storylines offered. I accept offers from Radio Televisyen Malaysia, and I am satisfied," Wan Raja stated. He explained that Malaysian actors often cannot afford to be selective due to the industry's size and the need to provide for their families. "If viewed from another angle, perhaps I am stereotyped because I don't have the opportunity to choose roles. Yes, that's true, and I've felt it for a long time," he admitted.

Wan Raja pointed out that the Malaysian entertainment industry, particularly for acting, is too small to allow for extensive role selection. He contrasted this with larger, more open international markets. "The scope of our audience is very small compared to Hollywood and so on. Out of millions of Malaysians, and further broken down by race, the number of Malay drama viewers is very small," he said. This limited audience size, he believes, restricts the variety of content produced and the opportunities for actors to explore different characters.

Despite these industry constraints, Wan Raja remains grateful for his enduring career. He credits his non-selective approach to roles for his continued presence in the industry, while many of his contemporaries have shifted to other fields. "I am very grateful, this attitude of not choosing roles is what has kept me relevant in the art industry to this day. Many of my peers have disappeared, some are in business and so on. Alhamdulillah, I am still here," he shared. He recently took on a different role in the RTM telefilm "Camar Poelang," which he described as a golden opportunity.
