Malaysian Cyclist Azizulhasni Awang Awaits Official Green Light for 2028 Olympic Bid

Malaysian track cycling star Datuk Azizulhasni Awang remains undecided about his potential participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, emphasizing that his immediate focus is on the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The Commonwealth Games gold medalist is awaiting official word from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the National Sports Council (MSN), and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (PKBM) regarding their plans for Olympic qualification. "For me now, it's not about whether I want to go to Los Angeles or not, but whether Malaysia still needs my services," Awang stated upon his arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. He stressed that any Olympic pursuit would only follow discussions with his team, family, and sponsors, contingent on Malaysia's official need for his expertise. Currently, his sights are set on the Asian Games, where he hopes to replicate his Commonwealth success despite acknowledging the strong competition from Japan and China. The tight schedule, including recovery and training after the Commonwealth Games, presents a challenge, but Awang is taking a step-by-step approach. He also indicated that a decision on competing in the World Championships, a crucial qualifier for the LA 2028 Olympics, is pending the official stance from KBS, MSN, and PKBM. The urgency stems from the packed Olympic qualifying calendar, which includes the World Championships, Asian Championships, and World Cup series. If his services are not required, Awang expressed contentment in retiring at his peak after the Asian Games.
