Local coaches shine as Malaysia wins eight gold medals at Commonwealth Games

Malaysia's impressive haul of eight gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is a testament to the growing prowess of its local coaches on the international stage. Officials highlighted the significant contributions of homegrown talent in disciplines like weightlifting, track cycling, judo, and lawn bowls.

Jefri Ngadirin, Director General of the National Sports Council (MSN), expressed admiration for the dedication of coaches such as Edmund in weightlifting and the former athlete now coaching lawn bowls. He also commended Harnizam's leadership in track cycling and Md. Nashriq's success in guiding Amir Daniel to a gold medal in judo.

Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, Malaysia's Contingent Chief, described the overall achievement of eight gold, three silver, and five bronze medals as a collective effort. He noted that the support system in place allowed athletes to focus entirely on their competitions, surpassing the initial targets set for the Games. "Alhamdulillah, we have surpassed the target for all medal colors by winning eight gold, three silver, and five bronze medals," he said. "This achievement is an appreciation for the athletes who worked hard. Whether they won medals or not, all athletes tried their best and gave their all for the national contingent."
