Malaysian designer's Jalur Gemilang-inspired outfits are a hit

A Malaysian boutique owner is making waves with her unique take on patriotic attire for the National Day celebrations. Norul Zila Yusoff, 44, has designed 'busana merdeka' that incorporates the colors of the Jalur Gemilang, Malaysia's national flag, without using the flag itself as a primary motif.

In the past, we usually saw the flag used as clothing, but I tried something different by taking the combination of Jalur Gemilang colors and translating them into clothing designs without needing to alter the Jalur Gemilang.

Yusoff's venture began modestly, initially creating National Day outfits for her own child. This led her to explore the market for themed clothing, especially after gaining experience with a batik clothing kiosk during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri season. Her approach focuses on translating the flag's colors into wearable fashion, blending traditional and modern design elements to appeal to a diverse clientele.

Despite being in the business for only a few months, Yusoff has been surprised by the strong demand for her creations. She reports selling up to 100 sets of 'busana merdeka' per month. The collection includes not only clothing but also matching accessories, all sewn in her own shop with the help of two tailors.

Every design combines traditional and modern elements according to the times to meet customer tastes.

The response has been particularly encouraging from parents seeking patriotic outfits for their children to wear to school. While Besut locals are her primary customers, Yusoff also receives orders from further afield, with some clients even providing their own designs for her to execute. Prices for the attire range from RM45 to RM75, including accessories, while custom clothing orders start at RM50, depending on the complexity of the design.

All these clothes are sewn directly from my shop with the help of two tailors.
