Malaysian designer transforms aircraft turbines into elegant fashion

Malaysian fashion graduate Nur Atiqa’Hidayah Qairyul Elfee, known as Atiqa Syugaa, has unveiled a striking collection that draws inspiration from the complex world of aircraft engineering.

Her collection, titled 'Engine's Elegance,' reimagines the powerful imagery of aircraft turbines, transforming them into elegant garments. This bold choice moves away from traditional fashion motifs like flowers or landscapes, instead embracing a hard, mechanical aesthetic and softening it into feminine designs. This innovative approach is a testament to the boundless imagination of young Malaysian designers.

Syugaa's journey into fashion was influenced by her childhood dream of becoming a pilot or engineer. The COVID-19 pandemic altered her career path, but she channeled her lifelong fascination with physics, mathematics, and aviation into her design work. The collection features 3D turbine panel details, aerodynamic silhouettes, and layered fabrics that mimic the continuous motion of engines. Reflective strips, inspired by aviation safety, add a modern touch.

The collection includes three distinct looks: 'Motion,' 'Precision,' and 'Aerodynamic.' The 'Motion' design features a jacket with turbine panels and a V-shaped skirt. 'Precision' showcases a cape with diagonal stripes resembling aircraft wings paired with a futuristic dress. The most dramatic piece, 'Aerodynamic,' is an oversized cape jacket with vertical turbine panels and a horizontally striped dress. The use of colors like 'Cloud Dancer' khaki and the precise structure provided by 'Plain Knitting Japan' fabric, along with custom-made zippers, highlight the collection's attention to detail and luxurious feel.
