Malaysian PM Anwar phones Jokowi during Penang visit

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reached out by phone to former Indonesian President Joko Widodo while Jokowi was in Penang for the Penang Peace Dialogue.

Anwar said he called before heading to MAHA 2026, where he had a prior appointment with farmers, livestock breeders, planters and other agricultural communities. He apologized for being unable to greet Jokowi personally during the visit.

Anwar said they exchanged news in a warm and friendly atmosphere. He also expressed solidarity with Indonesia after a volcanic disaster and amid continuing haze problems.

The Malaysian leader described Malaysia and Indonesia as kindred nations linked by shared history, culture and deep fraternal ties. He said political offices and titles may change, but mutual respect and friendship endure. “Insya-Allah, this bond will continue to be nurtured for the well-being of the people of both nations, as well as for the peace and prosperity of the region,” Anwar added.

Jokowi was in Penang from Saturday, September 5, through Sunday to deliver a keynote address at the dialogue, which aims to highlight ongoing peacebuilding efforts.
