Malaysian teachers' group calls for mental health support after tragedy

An organization representing Muslim teachers in Malaysia has called for a comprehensive overhaul of mental health support for educators after a "heartbreaking tragedy" at SJKT Ladang Kerling.

The Ikatan Guru Muslim Malaysia (iGuru) expressed condolences to the affected families and school staff, welcoming the Education Minister's visit and support initiatives. However, the group stressed the need for systemic change to bolster the mental resilience of teachers.

iGuru proposed several key measures, including the creation of an official Mental Well-being Policy for Educators, a special committee comprising various stakeholders like the Health Ministry and academic experts, and a Malaysian Teacher Well-being Index. They also suggested regular mental health screenings, enhanced psychological services, and the establishment of a crisis intervention team.

All parties must respect the investigation process being conducted by the Royal Malaysia Police. All parties must avoid any speculation or dissemination of unverified information as it can disrupt the investigation and add to the family's suffering.

Furthermore, iGuru recommended reducing teachers' non-teaching administrative burdens and equipping school leaders with training to identify early signs of emotional distress and burnout among staff. The organization urged the public to respect the ongoing police investigation and avoid speculation that could hinder the process or add to the families' suffering.

Teachers are the most important asset of the country who not only bear the responsibility of educating the nation's children but also face various professional, emotional, and social challenges that are increasingly complex.
