Malaysian weightlifter Hafizuddin claims Commonwealth gold but seeks better performance

Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin secured Malaysia's fourth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, clinching the top spot in the men's 88kg weightlifting event. The 23-year-old athlete emerged victorious at the SEC Armadillo, continuing Malaysia's strong showing at the games.

However, Hafizuddin admitted he was not entirely satisfied with his performance. He cited his failure to complete his first snatch attempt as a blemish on his otherwise successful outing. The athlete believes he could have achieved a better result had that initial lift been successful, noting that his total weight lifted was still significantly below his personal record.

Despite his personal critique, Hafizuddin expressed gratitude for contributing a gold medal to Malaysia's tally. He views this achievement as a crucial motivator for further improvement ahead of more significant upcoming championships. The weightlifter also drew inspiration from his teammates' remarkable comebacks, which fueled his own determination to fight until the very last lift.

The victory marked a memorable debut at the Commonwealth Games for the Perlis-born athlete. He achieved a total lift of 345kg, comprising 162kg in the snatch and 183kg in the clean and jerk, setting new games records in both disciplines. He outperformed silver medalist David McTaggart of New Zealand, who lifted a total of 338kg, and Scotland's Angus Doig, who secured bronze with 309kg.
