Maldives Rescue Diver Dies in Search for Four Drowned Italians

Tragedy has struck the Maldives, a premier diving destination, as a rescue diver has lost his life while searching for the bodies of four Italian nationals who perished in a catastrophic diving incident. The Italians, identified as a marine biology professor, her daughter, and two young researchers from the University of Genoa, failed to resurface after a dive on Thursday in Vaavu Atoll. Authorities managed to recover one body on the same day, but the search for the remaining four continued for a third day under challenging weather conditions. Adding to the grim situation, a Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) rescue diver also succumbed during the search operations. In response to the disaster, the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has indefinitely suspended the operating license of the luxury liveaboard vessel MV Duke of York, from which the Italians were diving. An official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident, with a particular focus on why the group descended below the officially permitted depth of 30 meters. The body of one diver was found in a cave at a depth of 60 meters. This incident, while rare for the Maldives, serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with deep-sea diving and the importance of adhering to safety regulations in such a popular tourist locale.
