Man, 20, Dies After Falling 54 Meters from US State Park Waterfall While Taking Photos

A tragic accident occurred at Oregon's popular Silver Falls State Park when a 20-year-old man fell to his death from the South Falls, a cascade famed for its beauty and the unique trail that allows visitors to walk behind the water.

Zachary Nicholas Murton, from Burlington, Kentucky, was reportedly near the top of the 54-meter (177-foot) waterfall when he slipped and fell into the pool below. Witnesses attempted to provide aid, including CPR, but Murton was pronounced dead at the scene. The Marion County Sheriff's Office, along with search and rescue teams and park officials, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall.

Silver Falls State Park, often described as the "jewel" of Oregon's park system, attracts over a million visitors annually. The "Trail of Ten Falls," a 12-kilometer loop, connects several breathtaking waterfalls, with South Falls being a major highlight. Despite its popularity and safety measures, this is not the first serious incident at South Falls; in 2020, a 19-year-old suffered severe injuries after jumping from the top of the falls.
