Man, 25, detained for murder of 75-year-old cattle rancher in Chiriquí

A 25-year-old man faces provisional detention in Chiriquí, Panama, following his investigation for the alleged aggravated homicide and robbery of 75-year-old cattle rancher Pedro Antonio Araúz. A guarantees judge with the accusatory criminal justice system ordered the detention after assessing the evidence and arguments presented.

The judge determined that the provisional detention was both necessary and proportionate. This decision was based on the strengthened link between the accused and the investigated events, as well as the identified procedural risks. These risks include the potential for the suspect to flee and the possibility of him interfering with evidence crucial to the ongoing investigation.

The investigation into the crime began following the incident on July 27th. Pedro Antonio Araúz was reportedly shot in the head in front of his farm in Gariché Abajo, Bugaba district, while he was attending to his animals. Preliminary reports suggest that several individuals intercepted him as he left his property.

Following the shooting, the assailants allegedly stole the 4x4 vehicle the rancher was using. Hours later, units from the National Police located the stolen vehicle in the Santa Marta sector of Bugaba. Subsequent police and public ministry operations led to the capture of the 25-year-old suspect during a raid in the Aserrío de Gariché corregimiento.
