Man, 80, dies after hitting loose cow on Uruguayan highway; animal also dies

An 80-year-old man lost his life in a fatal traffic accident on Route 39 in Maldonado, Uruguay, after his pickup truck struck a loose cow. The incident occurred around 8:00 PM on Tuesday when the man, traveling northbound, collided with the animal.

According to Policía Caminera (Traffic Police), the impact caused the man to change lanes, leave the roadway, and crash into a culvert. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene. The cow, which was identified as having a tag and belonging to a known owner, also died as a result of the collision. The road remained open to other traffic despite the accident.

In a separate fatal incident on Tuesday, two men died on Route 6 near Camino a la Calera, on the road leading into Montevideo. A motorcycle carrying two occupants veered off the road and struck a metal lamppost located in the central median. Both passengers on the motorcycle were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still investigating the causes of the motorcycle accident. The driver was a 39-year-old man, and his passenger was 38 years old. These incidents highlight the dangers of unsecured livestock on roadways and the inherent risks associated with motorcycle travel.
