Man arrested after driving stolen car wrong way

A man was arrested after a high-speed chase for stealing a vehicle and driving it the wrong way on a busy avenue in the Dominican Republic's capital. The suspect, identified as Eugenio Mauricio Álvarez, 60, allegedly stole a Nissan NV350 van from the Cristal de Jesús Autoimport dealership in the Villas Agrícolas sector.

Videos of the vehicle traveling against traffic on John F. Kennedy Avenue went viral on social media, causing concern among drivers and pedestrians. The police reported that the chase concluded at the intersection of Winston Churchill and Charles Summer avenues, where officers intercepted Álvarez and recovered the stolen van.

Authorities are also investigating reports from citizens who claimed the suspect may have hit an elderly person on Ortega y Gasset Avenue during the reckless drive. The suspect has been handed over to the Public Ministry, along with the recovered vehicle, for legal proceedings.
