Man arrested for allegedly stealing over $8,000 after snatching bag in Santiago

Panamanian authorities have arrested a 22-year-old man in Santiago, Veraguas, suspected of stealing more than $8,000 from a woman. The National Police confirmed the capture on Monday, August 24. The incident reportedly took place in the morning when the suspect allegedly snatched the victim's handbag, which contained the significant sum of money. Following the theft, the "Comerciantes Vigilantes" (Vigilant Merchants) citizen security program was activated. This program generated an alert, enabling a swift response from police units. According to Sub-commissioner Antonio Domínguez Flores, the executive of the Ninth Police Zone of Veraguas, officers located the suspect approximately 1.5 kilometers from the crime scene. During the police operation, officers successfully recovered the stolen money, which was reportedly hidden. The suspect was apprehended and handed over to the competent authorities, along with the recovered evidence, to proceed with the legal process. Domínguez Flores emphasized the critical role of communication between citizens and security forces in responding effectively to such incidents. The National Police also urged the public to exercise caution when carrying large amounts of money, to identify potentially risky locations, and to adopt security measures to prevent becoming victims of crime.
