Man Arrested for Murder of British Woman Found in Suitcase in Athens

Greek authorities have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the murder of a British woman whose body was discovered in a suitcase in Athens. Police announced Sunday that the suspect, identified by Greek media as an Afghan national, has confessed to the crime.

The victim, identified in media reports as 38-year-old Elisabeth-Jane Ross from Scotland, arrived in Greece on June 26. She was reportedly staying with a friend in the Piraeus area until July 10, after which she went to an undisclosed location in the greater Athens area. Her remains were found on July 18 inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli neighborhood.

According to a police statement, the suspect is charged with premeditated murder, theft, and violations of weapons laws. Authorities stated that the 26-year-old placed the victim's body in a suitcase and transported it to the abandoned property. In the days following the murder, police allege the suspect used the victim's bank card to withdraw money.

Greek media reported that the suspect claimed he found the woman already deceased. The body was discovered by a homeless person. Initial estimates suggest the woman died between five and seven days before the discovery, according to Greek broadcaster ERT. Interpol data reportedly assisted in identifying the victim.
