Man arrested for nationwide community center thefts, stealing over $9,000

Authorities have apprehended a 30-year-old man suspected of a string of thefts targeting community centers nationwide. The suspect, identified only as 'A,' has been arrested and transferred to prosecutors on charges of habitual theft and other offenses.

According to the Mungyeong Police in North Gyeongsang Province, the man allegedly infiltrated 13 community centers in various cities, including Mungyeong, Chungju, Wonju, and Suncheon. The thefts occurred between July 11 and July 25. During these break-ins, he reportedly stole cash and communal bank accounts.

Investigators revealed that the suspect exploited a vulnerability by using the PIN numbers, which were often written down with the bankbooks, to withdraw funds. This method allowed him to illicitly obtain approximately 13 million won (around $9,300 USD) from the stolen accounts. The police apprehended 'A' on July 28 while he was hiding in a motel in Daejeon.

Police officials emphasized the importance of secure password management, warning that stolen bank cards or accounts combined with exposed PINs can lead to further financial losses. The case highlights a pattern of targeted crime against vulnerable community facilities.
