Man charged with organised crime offence after extradition from UK

A 25-year-old man from Shannon has appeared in court after his extradition from the United Kingdom to face an alleged organised crime offence. Jake Hannam, of Purcell Park, was charged with allegedly participating in the attempted murder of Daniel Harty for a criminal organisation or its members between January 17 and 18, 2020.

Detective Garda Roddy Burke told Ennis District Court that Hannam was arrested at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel on September 2 under a European arrest warrant issued in December 2023. He was later taken to Shannon Garda station, where he was charged at 5:30 p.m. He made no reply after caution.

Judge Adrian Harris assigned legal aid solicitor Stiofán Fitzpatrick to represent him. Fitzpatrick said there would be no bail application because the district court was not the appropriate venue. The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial by indictment, and Harris remanded Hannam in custody to appear before Ennis District Court by video-link on September 9.

Hannam was then brought before a special sitting of Ennis Circuit Court concerning two warrants issued in April 2021. State solicitor for Clare Aisling Casey said the warrants related to two separate cases. Judge Alec Gabbett remanded him to Limerick Prison for a September 15 appearance. Those cases concern allegations of assault causing harm and threats to kill dating from 2019 and 2020 in Shannon.

The attempted-murder case relates to the shooting of Daniel Harty at Pound Street in Sixmilebridge on January 18, 2020. Tony McInerney was sentenced to 17 years in prison in October 2023 after pleading guilty to the attempted murder and to intentionally or recklessly discharging a firearm in a way that created a substantial risk of death or serious harm. The proceedings against Hannam remain allegations.
