Man dies after falling down slope of Calbuco volcano

A man has died after falling down a slope while descending the Calbuco volcano in Chile's Los Lagos Region. The incident occurred around 3:00 PM on Saturday, prompting a significant rescue operation in the challenging terrain.

According to preliminary information, the man was ascending the volcano with a friend when the emergency happened during their descent. He reportedly fell about 200 meters down the mountainside. His companion discovered him without vital signs and immediately alerted the authorities.

Carabineros, Chile's national police force, maintained contact with the person reporting the accident while coordinating efforts to recover the body from the difficult-to-access area. The Fiscalía (Prosecutor's Office) instructed the deployment of a Chilean Air Force helicopter and specialized personnel from the GOPE (Special Operations Group) to assist in the extraction.

While rescue teams worked to retrieve the victim, authorities have initiated an investigation into the exact causes of the fall. The Calbuco volcano is a stratovolcano located in the Andes, known for its significant eruptions in recent history, including a major one in 2015.
