Man Faces Periodic Court Appearances for Looting Store During Fire

Judicial consequences are emerging for looting that occurred during a fire at an L&R Comercial store on August 1. Luis Javier Castillo de la Rosa, one of 17 people arrested by the National Police, has been ordered to make periodic appearances before the court. He is accused of entering the establishment and taking merchandise while firefighters were still working to extinguish the flames. The incident took place at the store located on the Las Américas highway in the Los Frailes sector of Santo Domingo Este. The court's decision was made on August 4, following the formal accusation. Authorities have not yet explained why the other 16 individuals arrested in connection with the looting have not been brought before a judge. The looting was widely documented by videos shared on social media, showing individuals carrying away items like televisions and fans amidst the ongoing firefighting efforts. This sparked significant public anger and prompted a police and military operation to curb the thefts and recover stolen goods.
