Man gets over 10 years for role in deadly Moss Park shooting

A Brampton man has been sentenced to over 10 years in prison for his role in a fatal shooting that occurred in Toronto's Moss Park in September 2023. Nathan Bell was found guilty of discharging a firearm with intent to wound and three counts of violating weapons prohibition orders.

Exactly what preceded the violent altercation, and precipitated it, is not clear, but evidence suggests that there was an antagonistic verbal exchange.

Bell was acquitted of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and a third count of attempted murder following a six-week jury trial. The court heard that Bell and a friend traveled from Brampton to a bus stop in the Moss Park area where a group of people were gathered. Evidence suggests an antagonistic verbal exchange preceded the violence.

During the altercation, Omer Gedo, who was carrying an object believed to be a hatchet, approached Bell's friend. Gunfire erupted shortly after, hitting four individuals. Kyle Provo was fatally wounded, shot once in the back of the head as he fled. Gedo was shot five times, along with two other bystanders.

There is evidence that he had an elongated object in his hand, and he would later be discovered to have a hatchet or small axe in the front pocket of the hoodie he was wearing.

Bell testified that he fired in self-defense, believing Gedo posed a serious threat. Justice Philip Campbell described the scene as a "bloodbath" amid "gunfire and the bedlam." Bell and his associate fled the scene and were arrested a week later. Bell's sentencing reflects the gravity of the events, which left one man dead and three others injured.
