Man Gets Suspended Sentence for Assaulting Child, Police

A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for assaulting an 8-year-old girl and attacking police officers. The court also mandated probation, 160 hours of community service, and 40 hours of alcohol treatment. The incident occurred last July when the man, identified as Mr. K, grabbed the child by the neck and struck her twice in the abdomen, causing her to faint. He reportedly acted in a fit of rage after the girl rejected his touch. The assault extended to a witness who intervened, and during his arrest, Mr. K verbally abused and headbutted a police officer. The court noted Mr. K's prior convictions for similar offenses. While acknowledging that some victims have not yet recovered damages or offered forgiveness, the judge cited Mr. K's efforts to compensate the victims, including paying 5 million won to the child's family and depositing funds for the other victims, as factors in determining the sentence. The child's family also requested leniency.
