Man Held in Fatal Assault at Copenhagen World Cup Screening Agrees to Extended Detention

A Danish man accused in the fatal assault of a Swedish national at a World Cup screening event in Copenhagen has agreed to have his pre-trial detention extended by four weeks. The 31-year-old suspect will remain in custody, bypassing a scheduled court hearing that would have reviewed the necessity of his continued imprisonment.

The incident occurred on June 30 at an outdoor screening of a match between Norway and Ivory Coast on Islands Brygge. The Danish man is accused of striking a 32-year-old Swedish man, who fell, hit his head, and subsequently died from his injuries. The victim was identified as a Swedish police officer attending the event in a private capacity.

This case has ignited a significant public debate in Denmark, prompting even Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to comment on the suspect's behavior, describing it as "almost psychopathic." The government is now considering legislative changes to increase penalties for assault that leads to death, particularly for offenders with prior violent crime records.

In connection with the same event, two other men, aged 24 and 29, have also been charged with assaulting Swedish individuals. The 24-year-old is accused of stomping on the deceased victim while he was down and assaulting another Swedish national. The 29-year-old faces charges for kicking a different Swedish man and violating an entry ban. Authorities are still attempting to locate the 29-year-old suspect, and police have stated that the cases of the three accused men will be handled separately.
