Man jumps onto tracks at Tanah Abang as commuter train makes emergency stop

Passengers at Jakarta’s Tanah Abang Station screamed when a man jumped from Platform 2 onto the tracks as a Commuter Line train approached. The driver applied the emergency brakes and stopped the train in time.

Amateur video showed the man standing motionless on the tracks for several seconds before climbing back onto the platform. Once there, he remained still and bowed for several seconds before standing again.

KAI Commuter corporate secretary vice president Karina Amanda said the incident occurred shortly before a train bound for Manggarai entered Track 2. The driver braked to avoid hitting the man, who then returned to the platform. Security officers took him to a station security post for questioning.

The driver acted quickly and applied the brakes to avoid hitting the person. After the train stopped, the person immediately jumped back onto the platform.

Tanah Abang police chief Dhimas Prasetyo said station security personnel ran to the location to secure the man and calm passengers. During questioning, the man largely remained silent and showed indications of mental-health problems, he said. Because his mental state was unstable, officers did not conduct a deeper interrogation.

Officials contacted the man’s parents, but they were out of town. They then coordinated with the Madani Mental Health Care Rehabilitation Center, where he was undergoing treatment. Center staff arrived at about 7:53 p.m., and at 8 p.m. station security and supporting Marine personnel handed the man over to them. KAI Commuter said the incident caused no operational disruption, and normal passenger service resumed at Platform 2.
