Man killed in shootout with N.B. RCMP, watchdog investigating

A man in Maltempec, New Brunswick, died Wednesday after an exchange of gunfire with RCMP officers. The Mounties reported that officers were responding to a call about an armed man experiencing mental distress. According to a news release, the man fired at the officers and refused to surrender his weapon. "As the situation evolved, members discharged their firearms towards the man," the RCMP stated. "First aid was immediately administered, however the man died at the scene." The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), New Brunswick's police watchdog, confirmed it is investigating the incident. SIRT, which investigates deaths and serious injuries involving police, visited the scene and confirmed the man was struck by gunfire from at least one officer. Maltempec is a small community of approximately 300 people located on the Acadian Peninsula in northeastern New Brunswick.
