Man Missing During Meteor Shower Trip Found Dead in Japanese Volcano Crater

A family trip to witness a meteor shower in Japan took a tragic turn when a 70-year-old man disappeared, leading to the discovery of a body in a volcanic crater.

The man was part of a group of seven, including his family, who had traveled to Mount Karakuni, the highest peak in the Kirishima mountain range on Kyushu Island, to observe the Perseid meteor shower. The group began their descent on the morning of August 13th, but soon realized the elderly man was missing.

Following the man's disappearance, the tour guide immediately alerted the authorities. Police and fire departments launched a search operation. Around 11 a.m., search teams located a man lying inside the crater, approximately 50 to 70 meters below the rim. The individual showed no signs of life and was declared deceased.

While the discovery was made, authorities have not yet definitively confirmed if the body found in the crater is that of the missing 70-year-old man. Mount Karakuni is an active volcano with a crater measuring 900 meters in diameter and 300 meters deep. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and the identity of the deceased.
