Man Sentenced to Suspended Prison Term for Assaulting and Detaining Cohabitant

A man in his 60s has been handed a suspended prison sentence for physically assaulting and unlawfully detaining his cohabitant. The Jeonju District Court sentenced the 63-year-old defendant, identified as 'A', to one year and two months in prison, suspended for three years, on charges including aggravated assault, unlawful confinement, and property damage.

The incident occurred on September 20 last year at 'A's residence in Jeonju. Prosecutors alleged that 'A' became enraged when his partner, 'B' (53), returned home late. In a fit of anger, he snatched her mobile phone and smashed it on the bed. He then proceeded to assault her, reportedly holding a weapon, and subsequently confined her to the bedroom.

According to the report, 'A' and 'B' had been living together since April of the previous year. However, 'B' had moved to Gwangju five months later, ending the relationship. 'A' eventually persuaded her to resume cohabitation, but the peace was short-lived.

During the assault, 'A' allegedly wielded a broken soju bottle and pressed a kitchen knife against 'B's face. He then dragged her into the bedroom, tied their wrists together, and locked the door, preventing her escape throughout the night. 'B' was eventually freed when her brother reported the incident to the police the following afternoon.

The court acknowledged the severity of 'A's actions, stating that the nature of the crimes indicated poor character and that the victim likely experienced significant distress. However, the court also considered that 'B' had reached an agreement with 'A' and did not wish for him to be punished. Combined with 'A's record as a first-time offender, these factors influenced the final sentencing decision.
