Man to face trial for impersonating politicians to extort 15,000 euros

A man, identified as A.J., will stand trial for attempting to extort 15,000 euros by falsely claiming to represent politicians. The investigation, led by the Šiauliai Regional Prosecutor's Office, revealed that the accused spent nearly two months pressuring the victim.

During personal meetings and phone calls, A.J. allegedly threatened to expose compromising information unless the victim paid the demanded sum. Prosecutors determined that the accused, without any legal basis, used the names of several politicians to create the impression that they were collecting damaging material and demanding money, all for his personal gain.

The charges filed against A.J. fall under Article 181 of the Lithuanian Criminal Code, concerning "Extortion." If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to six years. Additionally, a civil claim exceeding 4,000 euros has been filed in the case. The criminal case has been transferred to the Telšiai District Court.
