Man With Burns on Nearly 90 Percent of Body Saved in Almaty

A man in Almaty has survived a catastrophic accident that left him with burns covering almost 90 percent of his body. The incident occurred in the courtyard of his home when a gas cylinder exploded in a shed, causing severe thermal trauma.

He was rushed to the emergency department of City Clinical Hospital No. 4, where doctors diagnosed him with barotrauma and extensive burns, 89 percent of his body affected, with 15 percent being deep burns. He also suffered a severe injury to his left arm, with significant soft tissue damage. Barotrauma, caused by sudden pressure changes from the blast wave, was also noted.

The patient was admitted in extremely serious condition. He spent four days in intensive care, and after his condition stabilized, he was transferred to our burns unit. Burns of this extent are always one of the most serious challenges for doctors. Thanks to the coordinated work of the clinic’s entire multidisciplinary team, we managed to save the patient’s life.

Immediately upon admission, the patient received intensive anti-shock therapy. Emergency surgery was performed on his injured arm the same day, followed by treatment in the burns unit. He remained in intensive care for four days before his condition stabilized enough for transfer. "Burns of this extent are always one of the most serious challenges for doctors," stated Yeldos Almenov, head of the burns unit. "Thanks to the coordinated work of the clinic’s entire multidisciplinary team, we managed to save the patient’s life."

Over the course of his hospital stay, the man underwent multiple operations, including skin grafting and reconstructive surgery on his arm. A month after admission, he was discharged. Expressing his gratitude, he shared, "I received not only physical but also emotional support, because coping with such injuries is very difficult." He now faces a lengthy rehabilitation period.
