For Liyana Jasmay, Threads is more than a social platform. The Malaysian actor and director uses it as a window into how different generations think, feel and react.

Jasmay, 38, said observing people’s behaviour is central to filmmaking because filmmakers must watch and understand the realities of everyday life. Threads allows her to see posts from Gen Z, Gen Alpha, millennials and baby boomers, giving her access to a wide range of emotions and experiences.

“As a filmmaker, 90 per cent of us really need to constantly observe human behaviour,” she said in an interview with Utusan Malaysia. “Threads is very enjoyable and influential because the app connects us with outsiders and gives us good information. I like reading about their disappointments, happiness and daily expressions because everything feels real and inspiring.”

She also receives private messages from people who say they want to enter the acting profession. Jasmay said others send advice or prayers for her wellbeing. She added that, so far, the messages have not included anything strange.

“So far, thank God, I have never received any strange messages,” she said. “There are actually so many good people. About 90 per cent send good wishes. I really appreciate it because it feels very personal.”
