Marileidy Paulino claims her fourth Diamond League title in commanding fashion

Marileidy Paulino added another Diamond League title to her collection on Saturday, winning the 400 meters final in Brussels in 48.64 seconds and setting a meeting record.

The Dominican runner dominated the race at King Baudouin Stadium, finishing well ahead of Norway’s Henriette Jaeger, who ran 49.20, and Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce, who took third in 49.36. Paulino’s victory was her 28th in the circuit and her fourth Diamond Trophy, following titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Her winning time surpassed the previous meeting record of 48.83, set by American Sanya Richards-Ross on Sept. 4, 2009. Paulino did not match her season best of 48.48, but the result reflected her control of the race. She said she had not needed to push herself to the limit, despite the cool conditions.

“It is the fourth time I have won the Diamond League and that is always special,” Paulino said after the race. “I have worked very hard and hoped to go under 48 seconds again this season, as I did in Tokyo last year. I have been very consistent this year and have not lost a competition. Today I am happy with my time because it was a little cold for running.”
