Marin's stunning free kick gives AEK Athens Champions League win

Răzvan Marin's spectacular free kick sent AEK Athens back into the Champions League with a 1-0 victory over LASK, prompting a huge reaction from the home crowd.

Marin struck in the 21st minute from the edge of the penalty area. With five players in the wall and another player lying behind it, the Romanian midfielder aimed for the goalkeeper's side and produced a fierce, dipping shot into the top corner.

The match remained close throughout. AEK had more control, better overall momentum and the greater threat, but LASK created chances through captain Horvath, around whom much of the Austrian league and cup champion's play revolved. AEK goalkeeper Brignoli made an important save against Horvath early in the second half.

AEK appeared to double its lead after the hour when Serbian forward Jovic headed in from Lovro Majer's cross. The goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the Greek side vulnerable as it failed to convert several second-half counterattacks and open spaces.

LASK pressed for a point in the closing stages, with Kalajdzic producing the final opportunity, but could not find an equalizer. The match marked the first round of the Champions League's opening league phase and drew about 32,000 people to AEK Arena.
