Master craftsman of Korean traditional instruments Kim Hyeon-gon dies at 91

Kim Hyeon-gon, a distinguished master craftsman (akki-jang) renowned for his preservation of traditional Korean musical instruments, has passed away at the age of 91. His passing marks the end of an era for traditional Korean music.

Kim dedicated his career to the intricate art of instrument making, particularly focusing on the restoration and creation of instruments essential for royal court music. Since the 1960s, he was a key figure at the National Gugak Center, meticulously working to maintain the authenticity and sound of these historical instruments.

His significant contributions were formally recognized in 2012 when he was designated a 'Master Craftsman of Musical Instruments.' Further accolades followed, including the Seoul Metropolitan Culture Award in 2022 and the prestigious Silver Crown Cultural Merit Medal in 2023, underscoring his profound impact on Korean cultural heritage.

Kim is survived by his wife, Im Chun-ja, his sons Jong-min (also a master craftsman) and Jong-woong, and his daughter Seon-kyung. The funeral services are being held at Severance Hospital in Seoul, with the 발인 (departure ceremony) scheduled for the morning of the 30th.
