McKenna shines to become world champion on homecoming

Aaron McKenna achieved a lifelong dream by capturing the vacant IBF world middleweight title, defeating Etinosa Oliha by unanimous decision in his first professional fight on Irish soil. The 27-year-old Monaghan native thrilled a fervent home crowd at Dublin's 3Arena, a moment long anticipated in his nine-year professional career.

Training under his father Fergal alongside his brother Stevie, McKenna faced a challenging opponent in Oliha, an Italian fighter who previously held an IBO world title. Oliha entered the bout with an undefeated record in 22 fights, having never competed outside of Italy or Germany. This homecoming bout represented an "acid test" for both boxers, with McKenna finally hearing the roar of his supporters after extended periods training in the US and elsewhere.

McKenna's path to this title shot was not straightforward, marked by promoter changes, a canceled tournament in Japan, and other fight delays. However, his move to Zuffa Boxing proved fruitful. The judges scored the bout 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112 in McKenna's favor. While the initial rounds were cautious, McKenna gradually asserted dominance, utilizing his reach and sustained pressure to wear down Oliha.

By the halfway point, McKenna had thrown twice as many punches as Oliha and maintained their effectiveness, while Oliha began to fade. McKenna showcased his skill, responding to Oliha's attacks and landing scoring punches. The fight neared a potential stoppage as McKenna inflicted punishment, though Oliha displayed resilience. The crowd erupted as the final bell signaled McKenna's inevitable victory, solidifying his status as Ireland's newest world champion.
