Measles Claims Seven More Children; Death Toll Reaches 950

The measles outbreak continues to claim lives, with seven additional child fatalities reported in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 AM today. These deaths, classified as suspected measles, bring the nation's grim total of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths this year to 950.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed that the number of suspected measles deaths has now reached 851, while the count of confirmed deaths remains unchanged at 99. The outbreak shows no signs of abating, as 1,098 new suspected measles cases were reported during the same 24-hour period. This brings the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to a staggering 152,736.

Adding to the concern, 73 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases were recorded, pushing the total number of confirmed infections to 18,651. The strain on healthcare services is evident, with DGHS data indicating that 133,573 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalized since March 15. Encouragingly, the majority of these patients, numbering 128,765, have reportedly recovered.
