While the name David Beckham typically conjures images of the legendary English footballer, a different David Beckham is currently capturing attention at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This David Beckham, however, is not on a football pitch but is a top Indian track cyclist, donning a helmet and cycling gear.

The story behind his name is as unique as his athletic pursuit. His father, an ardent fan of the England national football team, was eagerly watching an England match while his wife was pregnant. Upon witnessing the English star score a spectacular goal, he decided that if the baby was a boy, he would be named David Beckham.

The Indian cyclist himself recalls his childhood bewilderment, often wondering why people reacted with amusement or surprise upon hearing his name. It wasn't until he grew older and learned about the famous footballer that he understood his father's inspiration. "When I was little, I didn't understand why everyone laughed or was surprised when they heard my name," he shared with a smile. "When I grew up and learned who David Beckham was, I understood why my father gave me this name!"
