Memorial events mark eighth anniversary of Mati tragedy

Eight years after a devastating wildfire swept through Mati, claiming 104 lives and causing extensive damage, a memorial event is being held to honor the victims. The Association of Victims' Relatives and Survivors is leading the commemorations, stressing the enduring importance of remembering each life lost.

The association stated, "Memory is not only an act of honor, but also a constant reminder of the value of every life that cannot be undermined; and institutions, the State, and society cannot overlook this." The events, organized jointly with the Marathon municipality, are set to culminate on Thursday, July 23, at the site of the immense destruction that occurred on July 23, 2018.

The commemorations began with an overnight vigil on Wednesday, July 22, at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Neos Voutzas, where the victims' memorial stands. Relatives and residents gathered for a solemn tribute to those who perished, in what is expected to be a deeply emotional atmosphere.

Earlier, on Sunday, July 20, an annual memorial service was held at the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Mati. This service saw the attendance of relatives, friends, and local residents who continue to keep the memory of their loved ones alive. The main events on Thursday will include memorial prayers, Trisagion services, and a procession through the areas affected by the tragedy, concluding at Argyra Akti, for a poignant act of remembrance and collective reflection.
