Memphis Depay accuses Corinthians of breaking contract renewal agreement

Memphis Depay publicly accused Brazilian club Corinthians of breaking a contract renewal agreement, asserting that the deal was explicitly sanctioned by the club's president, sporting, legal, and financial departments. The Netherlands international, who joined Corinthians in 2024, expressed his disappointment and determination to protect his interests after the club decided against extending his contract.

This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by ⁠the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement.

Depay stated on social media that he did not want this situation and had consistently respected the club. However, he feels compelled to "react strongly" to the "unacceptable behavior." He promised to speak publicly in the coming days, vowing not to let the actions go "unsanctioned."

I didn’t want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests.

Corinthians, currently seventh in Brazil's Serie A, explained their decision by citing financial reasons. The club stated that a new commitment of the magnitude of Depay's contract would not align with the financial balance required for the institution's sustainability. They acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but deemed it necessary for the club's future. The club's president, Osmar Stabile, is scheduled to hold a press conference to further address the matter.
