Mendonça considers taking PF report on alleged evidence against Moraes to Brazil’s top court next week

Brazil’s Supreme Court could soon decide whether allegations involving Justice Alexandre de Moraes should become a formal investigation. Justice André Mendonça is considering taking a Federal Police report to the full court after releasing the document on Tuesday.

Mendonça suggested that the case should be debated in a public, in-person session. Chief Justice Edson Fachin must decide whether to accept that proposal and, if so, set a date. The court would then vote on whether to archive the report or turn it into an inquiry into Moraes.

The report contains messages sent by banker Daniel Vorcaro to a telephone number attributed to Moraes. Among the allegations is that Vorcaro sought the justice’s help to avoid detention. The conversations also allegedly show Vorcaro offering benefits to Moraes, including credit cards with limits of 300,000 reais for the justice’s two sons.

The case has already drawn opposing recommendations. Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet asked the Supreme Court to archive it, arguing that Mendonça improperly requested the Federal Police investigation because the decision should have been made by the full court. Gonet himself also appears in the report in connection with an alleged improper relationship with Vorcaro.

Some Supreme Court justices have privately argued that the court should not decide the matter this week. They believe members need enough time to assess the seriousness of the evidence presented against Moraes.
