Mercedes Driver Gets 6 Months in Prison for Assaulting Taxi Driver

A 55-year-old man, Nguyễn Ngọc Ngân, has been sentenced to six months in prison for "disturbing public order" after assaulting a taxi driver in Hanoi. The incident, which occurred on April 16, stemmed from Ngân's frustration at not being allowed to overtake the taxi.

Driving his Mercedes, Ngân repeatedly flashed his lights and signaled to pass the taxi driven by L.V.N. When the taxi did not yield, Ngân eventually overtook on the right, leading to a collision. Following the impact, Ngân exited his vehicle, verbally abused, and physically assaulted the taxi driver.

Appearing in court, Ngân admitted his actions were wrong but claimed he lost his temper and did not intend to cause the incident. He argued that the prosecution was too severe for a brief altercation, stating he had never harmed society before and expressed remorse. He attributed his behavior to personal stress, including a family mourning period and a sense of bad luck.

The court acknowledged Ngân's remorse and good character, noting that the taxi driver sustained no injuries and that Ngân's family had paid 30 million Vietnamese dong (approximately $1,200 USD) in compensation. Ngân also offered an apology to the taxi driver and his family in court. The court ultimately ruled that Ngân's actions directly impacted human health and negatively affected public order and safety.
