Mertens Mounts Comeback to Reach Monterrey Final Against Parry

Belgian second seed Elise Mertens staged a strong comeback to reach the final of the WTA 500 Monterrey Open, defeating Czech opponent Nikola Bartunkova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Mertens will now face Frenchwoman Diane Parry in the championship match.

Bartunkova started aggressively, breaking Mertens' serve early and racing to a commanding 5-1 lead in the first set. The 20-year-old Czech secured the set 6-1, capitalizing on three breaks of serve and denying Mertens any opportunity to regain momentum.

However, Mertens, the 30-year-old Belgian, shifted the momentum in the second set. After falling behind 3-0, she mounted a significant comeback, breaking Bartunkova's serve three consecutive times. Mertens went on to win six of the final seven games, clinching the set 6-4 to level the match.

Carrying her momentum into the final set, Mertens secured an early break for a 2-1 lead. She further solidified her advantage with another break in a lengthy seventh game before serving out the set 6-2 to complete her comeback victory. The U.S. Open women's singles main draw is scheduled to commence on Sunday.
