Metal debris on Romania's 'Sun Highway' poses explosion risk for tires

Authorities are warning drivers on Romania's A2 highway, known as the "Sun Highway," about a recurring and dangerous hazard: metal objects scattered across the roadway. These items, often crudely made, pose a significant risk, capable of causing tire explosions, punctures, and vehicle immobilization.

The Regional Directorate for Road and Bridge Management (DRDP) Constanța has repeatedly identified these metal objects. While many are believed to originate from unsecured loads, particularly those carrying scrap metal, there are growing concerns that some are being deliberately placed on the highway. This suspected intentional act raises the stakes, turning a potential accident into a deliberate act of endangerment.

"Unfortunately, we have also noted situations where malicious individuals deliberately fabricate and throw such objects onto the roadway, endangering the safety of all traffic participants," stated DRDP Constanța. The directorate's teams are actively working to clear the road, ensuring safer travel conditions. However, the persistent nature of the problem highlights a need for increased vigilance.

Drivers are advised to proceed with caution, adjust their speed to traffic conditions, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to allow for quick reactions to unexpected obstacles. Those who spot such objects or have information about vehicles shedding debris are urged to immediately contact DRDP Constanța, the National Company of Motorways and National Roads of Romania (CNAIR), or the emergency number 112.
