Mexican Anthropology Institute Clarifies FIFA Gala Dinner Met Heritage Norms

Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has clarified that a gala dinner hosted by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at Chapultepec Castle on June 10 adhered to all applicable regulations and preservation measures. The clarification comes after controversy arose regarding the use of the historic venue just before the 2026 World Cup inauguration.

The INAH, part of the Secretariat of Culture, stated that the event, organized by FIFA, was intended to showcase Mexico's cultural heritage to over 200 international representatives during the World Cup. FIFA incurred organizational costs and paid rights fees exceeding 1 million pesos (over $55,556) for the event, which the institute confirmed was conducted in compliance with regulations for such spaces. The INAH emphasized that necessary measures were implemented to safeguard the historic property, noting that Chapultepec Castle has a history of hosting various national and international cultural, academic, and diplomatic gatherings.

This statement follows criticism from some INAH researchers who had previously warned that the event might contravene Mexican laws. They pointed to the castle's "services" section, which states that the museum can only host cultural, academic, or scientific events, explicitly prohibiting social or business gatherings. The controversy centered on the private dinner held in a site deeply significant to Mexican history, including the 1847 defense of Chapultepec, raising questions about the boundaries for the use of heritage sites.

President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the event, stating that Chapultepec Castle has been rented for numerous events for years and that FIFA paid over one million pesos. She mentioned that Infantino had invited her, but she declined to stay, feeling her presence was not appropriate. Sheinbaum stated she only attended to offer a welcome message and greet attendees. The exclusive event was attended by former footballers, Mexican governors, foreign dignitaries, business figures, and FIFA representatives.
