Mexican Mining Sector Seeks Certainty Amidst Exploration Job Losses

Mexico's mining industry requires conditions that foster growth, safeguard existing operations, and capitalize on strategic minerals crucial for the global energy transition, stated Raúl García upon assuming the presidency of the Mexican Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Geologists (AIMMGM).

García highlighted that job losses, especially in exploration activities, have generated significant uncertainty for numerous families connected to the sector. He urged the implementation of policies that offer stability to the industry and stimulate its reactivation and development. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to ensure the continuity of mining operations and to harness the potential of minerals and metals essential for both economic progress and the energy transition.

In his inaugural address for the 2026-2028 term, García outlined plans to strengthen collaboration between companies and all levels of government. The goal is to improve working conditions for miners and effectively address the current challenges facing the industry. His agenda will focus on promoting innovation, technological advancement, and continuous training. It also includes increasing the dissemination of responsible mining practices and fostering closer relationships with local communities and other industry stakeholders.

García announced an increase in conferences, technical events, and training activities. The association also plans to expand collaboration agreements in innovation and technology and create more participation opportunities for mining companies, contractors, suppliers, consultants, and members. He asserted that the mining sector has historically demonstrated its commitment to national development, and the organization aims to generate benefits for its members, companies, communities, and the country over the next two years.

The outgoing leadership reported that during the 2024-2026 biennium, dialogue was maintained with authorities on sustainable development, environmental protection, water access, investment attraction, and strengthening the legal framework, all considered strategic for the mining industry's future. According to Data México, a platform from the Secretariat of Economy, approximately 232,000 people were employed in mining (excluding oil and gas) in the first quarter of 2026, with 67.5% in formal employment.
