Mexican Navy Secretary Welcomes IMO Chief for Official Visit

Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) announced the official visit of International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco. The visit, which began Tuesday, aims to deepen collaboration and verify adherence to global maritime standards in line with Mexico's National Maritime Policy.

Semar stated that a welcome protocol took place at the secretariat's headquarters. Navy Secretary Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles greeted the IMO chief, underscoring the spirit of fraternity and joint work with the United Nations agency. The IMO is responsible for ensuring maritime transport is safe and secure, while also preventing marine and atmospheric pollution from ships.

During his time in Mexico, Domínguez Velasco is scheduled to meet with authorities from Semar, the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, and the private sector. He will also visit the National Port System Administration (ASIPONA) in Veracruz. There, presentations will cover topics such as the National Port System, the Mexican Merchant Marine, the Decarbonization Strategy for Mexican Ports, the Port of Veracruz's practical implementation of international conventions, and the functions of the Maritime Authority in ports.

The visit aims to strengthen collaboration and ensure compliance with global maritime standards.

The IMO Secretary-General will deliver a keynote lecture at ASIPONA Veracruz and tour its facilities. He also plans to visit the Veracruz Merchant Marine School to interact with students. Additionally, he will visit the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Sciences at the Autonomous University of Veracruz, showing a commitment to engaging with young students focused on maritime and port studies.

Domínguez Velasco will also meet in Mexico City with female members of the Network of Women Maritime Authorities of Latin America (Red MAMLA-Mexico), an initiative promoting gender equity, leadership, and cooperation among women in the maritime and port sectors. Finally, he will meet with students at the Center for Naval Higher Studies, with participation from various Federal Public Administration departments. These activities conclude on Friday.
