Mexican officials promote disarmament and peace programs in Guerrero

Mexico's Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and the Secretary of National Defense, General Ricardo Trevilla, visited Montaña Alta de Guerrero to advance government peace initiatives. Their visit focused on implementing the "Tianguis del Bienestar" (Welfare Market) and "Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz" (Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace) programs.

In Olinalá, alongside Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda and Maia Campbell, the deputy representative of the UN Human Rights Office in Mexico, Rodríguez urged citizens to remove firearms from their homes to prevent fatal accidents. She emphasized that President Claudia Sheinbaum's security strategy prioritizes addressing the root causes of violence and strengthening communities.

The "Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz" program has been conducted in 11 municipalities across Guerrero, resulting in the collection of 165 firearms, over 5,000 rounds of ammunition, and 102 magazines from households. Nationally, the program has facilitated the exchange of 11,738 weapons, including 6,456 handguns, 3,422 long guns, and 1,860 grenades.

Rodríguez expressed gratitude to the Secretariat of National Defense for its support in making these programs possible. She commended the "invaluable social work" of the Defense Secretariat and the National Guard as a testament to their dedication and commitment to the people of Mexico.

The "Tianguis del Bienestar" program has reached 801 communities in four states, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Michoacán, distributing over 3.4 million items to more than 400,000 individuals. The "Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz" module will remain in Olinalá's main square until August 3, operating in conjunction with the Secretariat of National Defense and the Catholic Church.
