Mexico Adds 37,503 University Spots After UNAM Exam Controversy

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced the creation of 37,503 additional university places for students who were unable to secure admission to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This initiative aims to address the significant number of young people left out of higher education following a controversial UNAM entrance exam process.

The UNAM exam faced scrutiny after irregularities, including suspected use of artificial intelligence for cheating and anomalous results in its first fully online admission process. In response, the university organized a repeat in-person exam for nearly 38,000 applicants between August 12 and 19. The announcement of new spots comes as a direct response to the high demand and the persistent issue of insufficient places at UNAM, one of Latin America's largest public universities.

There are 37,503 additional spaces in the universities for all those who did not get into UNAM.

Starting August 25, students can access the 'Educación Superior 2026' platform, managed by the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP). This platform will provide detailed information on available spaces across various institutions, including the Rosario Castellanos University, the National Technological Institute of Mexico, and Open and Distance Learning University of Mexico (UnADM). Students can search for options based on institution, degree program, academic area, and proximity to their homes, covering fields from administration and law to engineering, health sciences, and education in different learning modalities.
