UN Humanitarian Chief Demands "Action" on Sudan War from Security Council

The United Nations' top humanitarian official, Tom Fletcher, implored the UN Security Council to move beyond discussion and take concrete "action" to address the devastating war and ensuing humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Speaking at a council session, Fletcher declared, "Sudan does not suffer from a lack of analysis. It suffers from a lack of action." He emphasized that more than two-thirds of Sudan's population requires vital assistance, including food, water, and medicine, while the world continues to supply weapons and mercenaries.

I ask that we do not hold another meeting where the Council merely describes the problem. Sudan does not suffer from a lack of analysis. It suffers from a lack of action.

Fletcher reported that the UN documented approximately 1,400 civilian deaths in Sudan during the first half of the year, with over 1,100 attributed to drone attacks. These attacks, along with heavy rains and bureaucratic hurdles, are severely impeding humanitarian organizations' access to affected areas. Recent clashes have also displaced thousands of people in the past two weeks, bringing the total number of displaced individuals to over 370,000.

Despite efforts by the UN and its partners to assist nearly 11 million people, Fletcher lamented the severe underfunding of humanitarian efforts. Only 40% of the requested funds for Sudan's humanitarian plan have been received, and a mere 17% for refugees in neighboring countries. "The people of Sudan need sustained and courageous diplomacy," Fletcher stated, criticizing the international community's indifference and distraction. He concluded by asserting that neither the Council nor the international community is helpless, and the tragedy lies not in a lack of solutions, but in a lack of will to implement them. The conflict, which began in 2023 between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has created one of the world's largest displacement crises.
