Mexico arrests 'El Comandante Levy,' a priority target for extortion

Mexican authorities have apprehended Levi Arguijo Morales, also known as El Comandante Levy, a key figure targeted by the Veracruz state prosecutor's office. The arrest took place in Zapopan, Jalisco, following intelligence and inter-institutional collaboration. Morales is accused of double homicide, with his alleged involvement in extortion crimes also under investigation. The Veracruz prosecutor's office had placed a reward of 350,000 pesos (approximately $20,000) for information leading to his capture. He is specifically linked to the January 2023 murders of two individuals in Atoyac, Veracruz. The arrest occurred after his identity was confirmed and an arrest warrant for qualified intentional homicide was executed. This operation aligns with Mexico's National Strategy Against Extortion, launched in July 2025, which has led to the arrest of 1,468 extortionists by May of this year, addressing a significant security issue in the country.
