Mexico City Deploys 15,000 Police for 2026 School Return

Mexico City will put 15,000 police officers on the streets as students return to school on Aug. 31, with authorities focusing on school entrances and the routes families use to reach them.

The capital’s Security Secretariat said the operation will begin at 6 a.m. and will include 1,410 official vehicles, 28 motorcycles, five tow trucks, nine ambulances, four motorcycle ambulances and a rescue unit from the Emergency and Medical Rescue Squadron. A Cóndores helicopter will conduct preventive overflights.

Traffic officers will direct motorists and discourage parking in prohibited areas, pedestrian crossings, or double and triple rows. Patrols will also cover transport routes serving schools, including Modal Transfer Centers, Metro and Metrobús stations, the Light Rail system, the Electric Transport System and the Passenger Transport Network.

The secretariat urged parents and guardians to leave early, respect pedestrian priority and traffic signals, reduce speed in school zones and allow students to pass. The operation will involve the Banking and Industrial Police, Auxiliary Police, the Traffic Control Subsecretariat and the School Security Unit.
